Manufactured from 1939 to 1959, American Modern dinnerware was manufactured by Stuebenville Pottery and was Russel Wright’s first dinnerware line. The largest selling dinnerware line of all time, American Modern grossed over $159 million in sales, introduced open stock selling in dinnerware and brought a modern informality to American’s tables. Characterized by organic, biomorphic shapes, American Modern demonstrated Wright’s mastery of color. Original colors included Chartreuse Curry, Bean Brown (later replaced by Black Chutney), Seafoam Blue (later replaced by Cedar Green), Sugar White, Coral and Granite Grey. Later colors added in the last few years of production were Cantaloupe and Glacier Blue.
